DIY Soda

On the 4th, we went out to our CSA farm for a visit and for lunch. We walked around the fields, saw we’ll be getting in our boxes in the weeks to come, and enjoyed the wide open scenery and fresh air. Linden was enamored with the dogs and the hammock—and the thick slice of bread that she enjoyed with lunch.

We also had some homemade sodas with lunch. The flavor options included ginger and elderflower*, the latter of which was so unusual and delicious that I basically inhaled my glass. We were lucky enough to be sent home with a jar—and I made batches of both ginger and mint syrup on Sunday to celebrate finally trading in our Soda Stream canister for a full one—so I can already tell that this is going to be the summer of DIY soda in our house.

If you are in the Des Moines area and frequent the farmers market, you can pick up a jar at the Blue Gate Farm booth. If you live elsewhere and want a summery treat—or a special something to drizzle over vanilla ice cream, pound cake, or fresh fruit—Jill sells the jars through her etsy shop.

*Elderflower is used in St. Germain, a liquor that became super popular a few years back. Which is to say that this syrup would make a killer cocktail component!

P.S. Their spring comb honey, pictured above, is a bit of heaven slathered on fresh bread.
